When the underlying fundamentals don’t support current valuations we won’t go along for the ride – we’ll wait until the time is right to take advantage of investment opportunities wherever they exist.
Perennial Asset Management is an independent Canadian investment boutique that has been managing discretionary portfolios for private individuals and institutions since 2006. We seek to nurture and grow our clients’ portfolios, whether markets go up or down.
We invest only when we strongly believe our clients will be sufficiently compensated to assume the associated risk. This flexible approach gives us the latitude to implement the necessary defensive posture to protect our clients’ portfolios when we see dangers on the horizon – a prudent mind-set very few wealth managers are equipped to follow.
If we do not foresee adequate upside potential, preserving capital becomes our first priority. After all, history teaches us that investment markets tend to repeat past patterns. Unfortunately, this has generally meant replaying patterns of overbuying, followed by extended periods of capital losses.
Mindful of this reality, at Perennial Asset Management we constantly monitor market data for trends and patterns that can reveal strong historical comparatives to the current market situation. Our goal is to recognize early signals in the marketplace and position our portfolios to benefit well in advance of the coming changes.
This approach sometimes puts us on the opposite side of general market sentiment. We’re okay with that. Not because we like to be contrarian, but because our experience has taught us that market sentiment is largely a reactive phenomenon. We much prefer to anticipate what’s coming… and act accordingly.

Murray Belzberg - President, Portfolio Manager
Renowned for helping people achieve their investment goals, Murray’s expertise has been honed over 35 years of successfully growing investment portfolios by drawing from a deep reservoir of unique investing insights and strategies.
Murray joined Merrill Lynch in 1977 and quickly entered both the President’s and Chairman’s Club. While the late 1970s’ prevailing wisdom was that the oil shortage was bullish for oil stocks, Murray avoided oil stocks and his clients’ portfolios prospered during the subsequent oil stock crash. Murray advanced rapidly first as a financial advisor, then as a manager, ultimately becoming Vice President at Merrill Lynch, responsible for retail sales for all of Canada.
Murray moved to First City Trust Company and assumed responsibility for mutual funds and the Personal and Corporate Trust Division. He revamped an investment-lending product that then became the most successful in Canada, and grew the personal trust business. Murray was also responsible for launching an innovative money market fund that more than quadrupled First City’s mutual fund portfolio.
Murray then joined a small asset manager and, over a decade, grew the assets from $20 million to $700 million. His clients earned excellent returns and he also helped them avoid the “tech bubble”.
Murray’s guidance and expertise has helped investors avoid major losses – from the oil shock fallout of the late 1970s, to the tech stock bubble of the late 1990s. Since starting Perennial, Murray has continued providing value as Perennial investors have earned solid returns and avoided the devastation experienced during the 2008 financial crisis.

Jim Ruess - Chief Investment Officer, Portfolio Manager
Jim’s astute abilities as a portfolio manager have been refined over 35 years of successful investing in a wide range of asset classes, both in Canada and globally.
From 1977-2003, Jim worked for Canada Life Assurance Company. His early experience as a credit analyst reinforced his belief that a company’s financial strength determines its ability to take advantage of opportunities and withstand difficult times. Jim progressed at Canada Life, analyzing real estate and oil and gas deals.
Moving to London (UK), Jim managed Canada Life’s “Gilt” portfolio, and upon returning to Canada, he continued to manage a fixed income portfolio that grew to almost $5 billion. Jim broadened the scope of this portfolio, increasing its participation in commercial mortgages and private placements. His commitment to capital preservation helped safeguard the portfolio against the early 1990s’ commercial real estate meltdown.
Jim progressed to manage Canada Life’s North American general fund. This $15.5 billion portfolio was 60% Canadian and 40% U.S., and invested in public and private equity, bonds, commercial mortgages, real estate, hedge funds and currency.
Time and again, Jim managed his portfolios to avoid significant losses. He reduced Canada Life’s exposure to equities in 1998-99, while increasing allocations to bonds, and he guided Canada Life to being one of the first Canadian institutions to add hedge fund exposure to protect capital. These investments greatly outperformed equities during the post-bubble years.
Jim’s trademark ability and skill in selecting the right investments for the circumstances has continued at Perennial, where his management of Perennial’s portfolios earned investors strong returns even during the 2008 equity market collapse. Jim clearly demonstrates a unique ability to strategically protect portfolios and take advantage of opportunities when they arise.

Core Beliefs
When you become a Perennial client, we manage your portfolio as we manage our own. That’s why we adhere to a number of core beliefs to guide and support everything we do to preserve and grow your capital. Specifically, we believe:
- We must retain our independence and not become beholden to anyone other than you, our client.
- Your portfolio should earn sensible returns in all market conditions.
- Managing downside risk is essential to preserving capital – hence we are not compelled to be invested when we think your portfolio will be put at risk.
- Your portfolio must constantly be scrutinized to ensure it is properly positioned for any approaching economic or market forces.
- We require the flexibility to utilize a broad array of investment instruments in order to earn you strong profits in all market environments.
Perennial marries these beliefs with our insights, our expertise and – most importantly – our investment judgment as we “walk the talk” to deliver solid risk-adjusted returns for our investors.
